Jewish Federations Sound the Alarm: SNAP Lifeline for Millions in Peril

If the government shutdown continues, millions of families are just four days away from losing the food assistance they rely on to survive. SNAP — the primary nutrition lifeline for 42 million Americans — could run out of funds, leaving people to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table.

An emergency appropriation or a broader shutdown resolution must be enacted immediately.

“Congress cannot allow SNAP — our nation’s food lifeline — to run dry,” said David Goldfarb, Senior Director of the Strategic Health Resource Center at Jewish Federations of North America. “Jewish Federations invest significantly in feeding our communities, but philanthropy alone cannot meet the needs of low-income families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities — including the 19% of Jews who struggle to make ends meet and the one-third of Holocaust survivors living in poverty.”
