Our History

For generations, Jewish Federations have been a cornerstone of Jewish life in North America, supporting our communities and responding to those in need worldwide.

Early 20th Century

Founded schools and synagogues, and helped Jews fleeing persecution worldwide.

Early 1940s

The United Jewish Appeal (UJA) supported European and Palestinian Jews through relief efforts, immigration aid, and settlement projects that laid the groundwork for the future State of Israel.

Late 1940s to early 1950s

Aided millions of Jews by bringing them to Israel, and helped millions more refugees, both Jewish and non-Jewish, resettle around the world, including North America.

1960s

Supported Israel through the Six-Day War, helped establish Jewish day schools, and built the community relations infrastructure that still exists today.

1970s

Supported Israel’s victory in the Yom Kippur War, and championed peace efforts with neighboring Arab states.

1980s

Led Operation Moses, which freed over one million Soviet Jews, and helped 8,000 Ethiopian Jews escape famine and refugee camps, bringing them to safety in Israel.

1990s

Executed Operation Solomon, a daring airlift that saved 14,000 Ethiopian Jews and transported them to Israel in just 36 hours.
