Caring Through Crisis: Reena’s Story

Caring for Ayisa’s Medical Needs in the Midst of War and Displacement

Reena, who hails from Cochin, India, epitomizes the dedication and resilience of foreign caregivers in Israel. For four years, Reena has been a vital part of her elderly client Ayisa's life.

With new challenges posed by the October 7th attacks and the subsequent war, Reena is able to help Ayisa navigate her journey, and provide her with the highest standard of medical care.

When the crisis struck, Ayisa’s family, unable to return from a vacation in Greece, relied on Reena's expertise and dedication. Initially, Reena hoped to continue caring for Ayisa in their usual environment, believing that doing so would offer a sense of stability amidst the chaos. However, as the situation around them deteriorated, it became clear that staying put was no longer viable.

Reena quickly realized that for Ayisa’s safety and well-being, relocation was essential. She reached out to Ayisa’s family to express her concerns and they  moved the duo to Yad Sarah's Wellness and Rehabilitation Hotel, a facility uniquely equipped to cater to those requiring mobility and nursing assistance, like Ayisa. They repaired Ayisa’s broken wheelchair, adapted to her dietary needs,  and provided a specialized bed.

The hotel, which has opened its doors to about 400 evacuated seniors, people living with disabilities, and their caregivers, stands out for its fully-accessible accommodations and comprehensive care. The Jewish Federations of North America has significantly contributed to this effort, ensuring that Yad Sarah’s doors remain open to evacuees.
"I believe Israel is protecting its people…They are defending themselves and their citizens. I pray for peace and the return of calm, quiet days with smiling faces. I want to thank the Jewish Federation for their support to all of us evacuees in this hotel. Their help has been invaluable during these challenging times."

The contributions of Jewish Federations are indispensable to patients at facilities like Yad Sarah. Reena’s strength, dedication, and message of gratitude showcase the need for dignified care that Ayisa and all those who rely on caregivers deserve.
