The Jewish Federations of North America (“JFNA”):
The Jewish Federations of North America represents 146 Jewish Federations and over 300 Network communities, which raise and distribute more than $3 billion annually for social welfare, social services, and educational needs. The Jewish Federation system, collectively among the top 10 charities on the continent, builds and sustains flourishing Jewish communities in North America and protects and enhances the well-being of the State of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.  
 
The Israel Travel Alliance (“ITA”):
Since May 2020, professionals, and funders from across North America and Israel have been gathering under the umbrella of the Israel Travel Alliance (ITA). Before COVID, the 45 ITA organizations together represent over 80,000 annual participants to Israel on educational travel experiences. As varied as these programs are, they are united in their commitment to building connections with Israel and Israelis as an essential part of education and identity building. The Jewish Federations of North America have been proud to convene, support and assist this important collective, all of whom help advance Jewish Federations’ commitment to supporting the State of Israel and strengthening Jewish identity and education.
 
The ITA initially assembled with a common desire to act collectively to manage the immediate impact of the coronavirus pandemic, preserve the infrastructure that has been built up over several decades, and identify new opportunities for cooperation and coordination. As ITA members and the North American Jewish community prepare for a post-COVID environment, the collaboration and collective action exhibited during the pandemic offers a launchpad for developing a robust and comprehensive approach to collaboration going forward.
 
Position Summary:
Working in close partnership with the ITA and its Steering Committee, the Jewish Federations of North America seeks to leverage the collective strength of ITA to advance the field of educational travel experiences to Israel by hiring a full-time professional to lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan to grow the ITA and its role in North America and Israel. 
 
The Executive Director, Israel Travel Alliance will be responsible for all aspects of the initiative, from strategy and planning to fundraising and operations, and will work to build the ITA into a dynamic entity that aims to:
 
  • Identify and work together to address common challenges/opportunities, including gaps and overlaps. 
  • Identify, create, and implement economies of scale to achieve greater efficiencies and cost effectiveness. 
  • Establish an ongoing working relationship with the Government of Israel in support of educational tourism, in full partnership with JFNA’s Israel team.
  • Raise the profile of and awareness around Israel travel programs with Israeli government officials and global funders.
  • Create, support, or develop the necessary infrastructure to support reopening of trips.
  • Preserve critical operating infrastructure/prevent a talent exodus. 
  • Identify areas of collaboration and potential shared resources. 
     
To accomplish these and other opportunities, the Executive Direct will be responsible for:
 
  • Partnering with the ITA’s Steering Committee to develop a plan for the next phase of the ITA. 
  • Building meaningful relationships with all ITA member organizations, including the funders represented on the ITA.
  • Developing ITA’s full budget plans and raising and stewarding support for the ITA’s activities.
  • Planning and directing group gatherings, including small and ad hoc conversations, to support the coordination and alignment across the ITA.
  • Pursuing opportunities for gathering ITA members for in-person gatherings, in North America and in Israel, either as a stand-alone conference or as part of other communal gatherings.
  • Overseeing the process of collecting and utilizing data across the ITA, and/or on behalf of the ITA. 
  • Creating and implementing systems for sharing resources, information, and other learnings across ITA members; Establishing best practice standards across the ITA.
  • Developing and implementing training and professional development opportunities for ITA members. Supporting opportunities for resource and training to be shared across the ITA by members.
  • Identifying and sharing trends and learnings across the ITA and the broader field of education in travel.
  • Ensuring that the ITA leverages resources and learnings from across JFNA and pursuing opportunities to align the work of the ITA with other aspects of JFNA’s work on behalf of the Federation system.
  • Developing and managing policies and protocols related to the work of the ITA, including bylaws to guide the membership of the ITA and its Steering Committee.
     
The successful candidate will be:
 
  • Creative, strategic, flexible, able to experiment, and to gather iterative feedback.
  • An experienced manager, competent in breaking down, supervising, and directly implementing dynamic project and organizational steps. 
  • Able to build meaningful and trusting relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • A quick study who can understand and translate complex information.
     
The successful candidate will have:
 
  • A proven track record of focused, issues-oriented strategic project leadership.
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience.
  • Experience in the field of Israel travel preferred.
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across organizations.
  • Experience with Jewish communal life and with building successful partnerships.
  • Experience working with and fundraising from philanthropic foundations.
  • Effective problem solver, versatile, and action oriented.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.
  • Hebrew proficiency.
  • Willingness to travel.
