1. Educate yourself and your family about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism.
Anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise around the world. Learning about the Holocaust helps us appreciate the depth of anti-Semitism and its root causes. Try www.yad-vashem.org.il/, www.remember.org, www.adl.org. Look for new information on anti-Semitism at www.ujc.org and www.ajc.org.
2. Conserve energy.
American foreign policy is heavily influenced by the need for imported oil. Conserve energy at home by using compact fluorescent light bulbs, buying energy efficient cars (or biking or walking!), keeping tires inflated. For conservation ideas, go to www.fueleconomy.gov/fed.
3. Visit your congressman.
Form a concerned citizen's group, then make an appointment with your Congressman in his or her Washington office. Rent a bus and go—you will demonstrate how serious his/her constituents are about Mideast issues. You can also go to Washington on a UJC mini-mission through the Washington Action Office. Contact your local federation or go to www.ujc.org/content_display.html?ArticleID=1643.
4. Donate blood...
...when you are in Israel. With all the recent attacks, there is a great shortage.
5. Make your home in Israel, or bring Israel into your home.
Make aliyah -- and if you can't make that commitment now, raise your children to love Israel and to plan to live there one day themselves. Buy and hang a map of Israel, and look at it. When there is a terrorist attack, look at where it took place. Discuss Israel and current events at the dinner table. Read books or rent movies about Israel's history. (See Resources for ideas.)
6. Devote time to Jewish learning.
Take a Hebrew class at a local synagogue or JCC, to strengthen your bond with the land of Israel. Study Torah, even a few minutes a day. The Web site www.torah.org is a good place to start.
7. Vote.
Elected officials analyze voter registration and turnout carefully, and make decisions accordingly.
8. Invest in Israeli companies.
Buy stock in Israeli companies. Over 140 Israeli companies are traded on the American stock exchanges. Contact Amidex Mutual Funds (Symbol: AMDEX) at www.amidex.com or (888) 876-3566. Hundreds more are traded on the Tel Aviv stock exchange; for information in English go to www.globes.co.il, www.themarker.com, or www.tase.co.il. And invest in the future of Israel and the Jewish people by making a contribution to the Israel Emergency Fund through your local federation or at www.ujc.org.
9. Brainstorm.
Get a group of friends together and spend an hour brainstorming for more ideas on how to help Israel.
10. Pray.
Pray to God to bring peace to the land. Pray for Israel's leaders who need wisdom, and for the safety of Israel's soldiers. Pray for the health of those injured in terror attacks -- see the Web site www.groups.yahoo.com/group/prayers-injuredVAT. You can send prayers via the Western Wall at www.thewall.org. Recite tehillim (psalms)—a time-honored custom for Jews in times of distress. A free downloadable translation is available at www.artscroll.com.
