2012 National Young Leadership Cabinet Study Mission to Greece

Mission Highlights:

Thessaloniki:

• Learn about the rich Jewish heritage of Greek Jewry
• Panoramic overview of Thessaloniki, including the Jewish villas Casa Bianca, Villa Allatini, Villa Mordoch and Villa Modiano
• Meetings with political leaders
• Participate in hands-on volunteer service project(s)
• Meet with leaders of the Jewish community
• Visit the Monasteriotes Synagogue used by the Red Cross as a warehouse during the Second World War, one of the few synagogues to avoid destruction by the Nazis
• Lunch with Jews hidden as children during the Holocaust by gentiles, and their descendants 
   

Athens:

• Tour the Acropolis Museum, which houses over 4,000 artifacts and objects, ranging from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece
• Lunch with U.S. Ambassador at his residence Daniel Smith
• Breakfast in the home of Israeli Ambassador Arye Mekel
• Meetings with political leaders
• Visit the Jewish Museum of Greece, with a collection of over 10,000 rare items of great historical significance
• Dinner with members of the Jewish Community of Athens
• Kabbalat Shabbat with the Children of the Jewish Day School
