JFNA Teleconference: Marriage in Israel Can we tinker with the status quo, or do we need to examine a new model? Jan. 25, 12:30-1:30 pm EST
As part of JFNA Israel's ongoing efforts to brief you on key issues in the Jewish state, we invite you to join us for a teleconference to discuss the nature of marriage in Israel. The call will be chaired by Michael Gelman, chair of the JFNA Executive Committee, and feature Mr. Yizhar Hess, CEO of Israel's Masorti movement; former MK Prof. Naomi Chazan; and Rabbi David Stav, chair of the Tzohar organization.
Many secular and non-Orthodox Israelis find laws requiring Orthodox marriages in Israel to be discriminatory, and some are opting either not to marry or to marry abroad. While several creative ways of working within this framework have been identified, many Israelis continue to challenge the current system.
During the call, speakers will discuss whether to modify the framework for marriage in Israel, and provide context for a range of issues including civil marriage, secularization of marriage and more. Following the speaker presentations, there will be time for Q&A.
