ISRAEL EDUCATION FUND:
Connecting Generations of
the
Pilavin Family to Israel
December, 2011
Helene Pilavin Gates with family at the Helene Pilavin Gates Pre-Kindergarten
Nursery in Rishon Lezion.
Helene Pilavin Gates grew up understanding
the importance of actively supporting Israel philanthropy. Witnessing her mother’s dedication to building Israel through her decades long partnership with IEF instilled in Helene a lifelong desire to support the people of Israel.
During the 1970s with the help of IEF, Helene's mother built six pre-kindergartens throughout Israel. In 1978, Helene, accompanied by nearly forty family members including all four of her
own children, attended the dedication ceremony of the Rishon Lezion pre-kindergarten named
in her honor.
Thirty five years later, Helene, now a grandmother, traveled to Israel with two of
her children, their spouses, and five of her grandchildren to visit the Helene Pilavin Gates Pre-Kindergarten. Her young grandchildren
spent that inspirational day playing with Israeli
children in the classrooms that her mother built. Recognizing how transformative her own experiences in Israel were, Helene felt an obligation to expose the next generation of
her family to her mother’s life’s work and to connect them to Israel’s future.
