Feb. 5, 2010

In the few weeks since a deadly earthquake wreaked havoc on Haiti, the Jewish Federation movement has raised more than $3.6 million for Haiti relief and joined a range of efforts to provide long-term help to the battered island nation.

In the latest example of how the Federation movement is teaming up with others to help Haiti, the Jewish Federations is among members of the "Teens United for Haiti" t-shirt project, launched by the PANIM Institute of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO). "Teens United for Haiti" will sell a t-shirt with more than a dozen organizations’ logos and the group name to generate new Haiti aid. For details or to create t-shirts for an event, click here.

As relief efforts continue in Haiti, locally, Federations in the United States are doing whatever they can to help the Haitian people on our shores. The Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, for example, has worked with several organizations to provide mental health services and medical care to Haitian evacuees, who briefly used Chicago as a transit point last weekend before continuing to other destinations in the United States.

Meanwhile, The Jewish Federations of North America continues to work with the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief (JCDR) to monitor allocations and coordinate efforts among Jewish organizations. So far, JCDR has allocated $53,000 to Chabad of the Dominican Republic, Afya Foundation and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to provide water, food, shelter, and emergency health care to local partners on the ground in Haiti. JCDR will continue to meet weekly and make allocations to best serve the needs of the Haitian people during the aftermath of this tragedy.

The Jewish Federations of North America and many individual Federations are also sending donations directly to our overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). JDC has raised $3.72 million and is supporting Magen David Adom, EcoWorks, Afya and Chabad. In addition, JDC has initiated a life-saving water tanks project and has funded the installation of 135 water tanks in Haiti. JDC is also working with IRC, Catholic Relief Services, and Heart to Heart.

Please visit this Haiti Relief page to keep updated about the situation and the Federation response. The page features reports about relief efforts by Jewish Federations, their partners and other Jewish groups.
