UJC/FEDERATION SYSTEM UPDATE:
THE GAZA SITUATION

January 23, 2009

UJC Board of Trustees "Virtual Caucus" for Israel Solidarity Drive

The UJC Board of Tr
ustees held a virtual caucus on behalf of the Israel Solidarity Drive, which aims to raise $10 million to help the nearly 1 million Israelis who suffer what is called the "emotional shrapnel" that thousands of missiles have inflicted over eight years. Many board members and UJC staff demonstrated their leadership by making a further commitment to this fund and by making statements of support.

The caucus was led by
Board Chair Joe Kanfer and National Campaign Chair David Fisher via teleconference on Wednesday. Board members agreed that gifts will be made in cash through local federations. UJC deeply appreciates the board's commitment and their on-going support of Israel at this difficult time.

The UJC/Federation system has already raised more than $7 million toward this effort.

UJC and the Federations of North America are supporting the Israel Solidarity Drive with an e-philanthropy effort that includes Web banners and a Google ad-word campaign. Federations may customize Web banners for their own marketing efforts. To download Web banners, click here.

Please encourage your community to donate to the Israel Solidarity Drive now. If your federation would like to create a link to the donation form, please use this URLwww.ujc.org/IsraelSolidarityDrive. Please see these updated talking points to use for Israel Solidarity Drive efforts in your community.

UJC National Young Leadership (NYL) Solidarity Mission to Israel

A UJC National Young Leadership (NYL) Solidarity Mission to Israel is scheduled for Feb. 1-3. For details, contact UJC's Matt Abrams Gerber or to register, click here.

Next-Gen Solidarity Mission to Israel

The Next-Generation Solidarity Mission to Southern Israel, which ran for two days this week, brought 15 young leaders from across the UJC/Federation system to see the lives of those living in Southern Israel first-hand. Dan Brown, of ejewishphilanthropy.com, joined the group and delivered some excellent dispatches for his blog and the UJC's Voices From Sderot blog. In his dispatch he notes listening to children practice the "Song to the Red Color" -- a nursery rhyme set to music that children in the missile zone sing when sirens soundThe song helps children remain calm and teaches them emergency procedures.
