LEADERSHIP FOR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2009
Leonid Nevzlin 2009 International Chair

Leonid Nevzlin, Born in Moscow in 1959, Mr. Nevzlin graduated from the Russian State University of Oil and Gas in Moscow. He has an MA in Management and Marketing from the Moscow Plechanov Highest School of Economics.

Prior to immigrating to Israel in 2003, he served in high-ranking roles in the both private and public sectors in the Russian Federation. His positions included First Deputy Chairman of the Board of Bank MENATEP; First Deputy Chairman of YUKOS Oil; Deputy Director of ITAR TASS, the news agency; President of the Russian Jewish Congress; Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation; and Rector of the Russian State University for Humanities.

Leonid Nevzlin is an active philanthropist who has been involved in and supportive of Jewish educational and academic projects for many years. In Russia Mr. Nevzlin supported research initiatives on the history and heritage of the Jewish people. He established the Moscow Jewish Cultural Center, the International Center for Russian and East European Jewish Studies in Moscow, as well as working in partnership with ORT, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Holocaust Fund to develop many other Jewish educational programs.

In Israel, Mr. Nevzlin established the NADAV Fund to support initiatives that strengthen Jewish Peoplehood, build substantive and pluralistic Jewish identity, and create lasting connections among Jews the world over.

Mr. Nevzlin’s first project in Israel was The Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, which was later networked to similar centers in Moscow, Vilnius and Kiev.

Leonid Nevzlin is also one of the big supporters of Masa Israel Journey and the Birthright Israel's Mifgashim project, which allows meetings between Birthright participants and their Israeli peers.

In 2004, Leonid Nevzlin, together with the Government of Israel, created a rescue package to help preserve Beth Hatefutsoth, The Diaspora Museum. He now serves as Chairman of its International Board of Governors. In collaboration with prominent figures in Israeli society and Jewish communities from around the world, he is working to make Beth Hatefutsoth a vibrant world class museum dedicated to telling the unique and ongoing story of the Jewish People.

Mr. Nevzlin serves on the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Board of Trustees of Keren Hayesod – the United Israel Appeal.

Gildenhorn's 2009 GA Co-Chairs

Dede (Diane) Shaff Feinberg, a past president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, currently serves on the Executive Committees of UJC and UIA and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel.  She remains active in her home community, having chaired the highly successful Israel@60: A Capital Celebration on the National Mall. She has won awards and honors for her communal volunteer work.  

Kenneth Feinberg, an attorney and one of the nation's foremost mediation specialists, has been an adjunct law professor at several leading law schools including Columbia University, Georgetown University, New York University and the University of Pennsylvania. He is the former Administrator of the Federal September 11th Victim Compensation fund, appointed by the Attorney General of the United States. President Obama recently named Ken Special Master for Executive Compensation, Department of the Treasury, charging him with vetting compensation for executives of large corporations that have received federal bailout funds. He has been a speaker at the UJC International Lion of Judah Conference and for Federations around the country. Ken often provides counsel on issues of importance within the Jewish community.

Gildenhorn's 2009 GA Host Community Co-Chairs

Michael Gildenhorn is a managing director of Chevy Chase Trust and former president of Asset Management, Inc. He has 23 years of investment management experience. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Duke University, where he earned a degree in Economics, and he received his law degree from George Washington University. Michael is a trustee of the United Jewish Endowment Fund of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and past president of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington.

Cathy Zachs Gildenhorn was born in Columbus, Ohio but has lived in the Washington, DC area for more than 20 years. She is on the board of the Kingsbury Day School and serves on the Florence Melton Adult Mini School Advisory Committee. She has served on the Boards of Adas Israel Congregation, Jewish Social Service Agency and The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. Cathy has also served as Presidential Appointee to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. She is a graduate of The University of Michigan and Emory University School of Law.
