Director of Planned Giving and Endowments 

The Director of Planned Giving and Endowments will have overall responsibility for managing the planned giving and endowment efforts of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, including its operations, programs and activities, and the assigned staff resources of the Lehigh Valley JEWISH FOUNDATION Committee and its subcommittees. The Director will maintain and enhance relationships with donors and will have primary responsibility for identifying and cultivating new endowment donors. The Director will interact at the highest levels with members of the planned giving community from across the Lehigh Valley area as well as local and national foundations to promote business referrals and collaborative partnerships. The Director will interact with other Federation senior managers and other members of the Federation staff and community.

Fundraising, Donor Stewardship and Marketing: 

  1. Direct and conduct development, solicitation and marketing to create new endowment funds.
  2. Increase gifts from current donors and obtain gifts such as bequests, gifts of retirement plans and split interest trusts and other entities that will substantially contribute to Federation’s future endowment. 
  3. Enhance communication, offer educational opportunities and maintain positive relationships with annual campaign donors and current fund holders so they continue to be a key source of additional endowments.
  4. Maintain and enhance relations with the greater Lehigh Valley professional estate planning community and cultivate these sources of business referrals.
  5. Maintain and enhance relations with local and national foundations and seek to identify strategic collaborations.
  6. Advise and assist prospective donors and their professional advisors in their charitable and estate planning efforts.
  7. Develop a thorough knowledge of local beneficiary agencies and synagogues, and overseas beneficiaries in order to accurately represent their financial needs to prospective donors.

Management and Administrative duties: 

  1. Direct strategic planning for endowment department to create the maximum financial resources with controlled expenditures.  
  2. Staff endowment committees to develop lay leadership, obtain lay input and to increase participation in decision making process.
  3. Demonstrate leadership, communication, mentoring, empowerment and resource management within Federation and the endowment department.
  4. Work with Investment Committee, maximizing investment returns within appropriate risk parameters. 
  5. Ensure operations of foundation endeavors are conducted within stringent requirements of law and fiduciary duty.
  6. Maintain relationships with, and the records of, affiliated supporting foundations.
  7. Develop and implement annual budget for the endowment department.
  8. Provide effective liaison with other departments to promote integration of donor development, marketing, information technology and fund distribution into successful Federation operations.
  9. Direct the operations of the endowment department to include record retention, fund distributions, events and mailings. 
  10. Support the Federation’s annual campaign by accurately and successfully completing special assignments according to defined timelines, cooperating with co-workers and volunteers to achieve campaign goals.
  11. Promote the mission of the Federation at all times through superior customer service to all and through the efficient use and care of all resources. 


The Director of Planned Giving and Endowments functions under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley as augmented by the guidance of the Jewish Federation President, the Chairperson of the Lehigh Valley JEWISH FOUNDATION Committee, and the chairperson of the Lehigh Valley JEWISH FOUNDATION Investment Committee. 

The Director of Planned Giving and Endowments, an exempt position, will serve as a member of the Resource Development Management Team.

Desired Education Degree/Level: Masters

Prior Experience: QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree; a graduate degree in law, accounting, finance, business or related field is preferred. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, the ability to deal with confidential topics, and ability to articulate the mission of the Federation’s endowment program to the community are required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, supervisory and leadership abilities, and sales/marketing skills are essential. Knowledge of Jewish culture and the organized Jewish community are required, as is the ability to present a strong and recognizable commitment to the enrichment of the Jewish community. Advanced technical knowledge and experience in the field of planned giving, financial planning, tax law, and/or tax accounting is desired. Demonstrated fundraising experience is helpful. Ability to organize, prioritize, delegate and follow through with multiple projects simultaneously, focusing carefully on detail and timelines – while directing and supervising the work of others – are essential. Desire to be part of an aggressive, cooperative, and collaborative professional staff team is required. Working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office software (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Crescendo planned giving software (or equivalent) is required. SUPERVISION

Additional Information: Selected Tasks: 1. Coordinate with the Federation Director of Finance and Administration to oversee and provide Accounting for all funds Reporting for all funds Calculation of fees Verification of master statements and sub accounts Tracking of distributions and contributions Confirm transfer of securities to the benefit of the endowment fund Development of quarterly reports 2. Oversee the investment, custodial, brokerages, trust, and accounting services provided to the endowment department by financial institutions and advisors 3. Supervise the Administrative Assistant in the capacity that s/he shall · Maintain endowment files · Prepare and dispatch correspondence · Develop and maintain forms · Create reports and convey information to donors · Verify tax exempt status of each distribution · Review and send quarterly reports to donors/fund holders 4. Coordinate with the Federation the development of Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment PACE), Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE), and other integrated Federation financial resource development programs. 5. Review, create, and/or re-draft endowment structure governing documents, legal forms, and operating policies, as needed 6. Prepare all allocation, distribution, and budget reports for the endowment department committees and the Jewish Federation Board of Directors. 7. Create a professional advisory committee 8. Develop and implement a marketing plan to support endowment development efforts in consultation with the Federation’s Director of Marketing
