BACKGROUND INFORMATION
San Antonio boasts a population of 1.1 million, including a dynamic and highly respected Jewish community of over 9,000. It is a big city with a small town feel, and is home to the Alamo (http://www.thealamo.org), Riverwalk (http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com), Fiesta Spring Festival (http://www.fiesta-sa.org), South Texas Medical Center (http://southtexasmed.com), and Brooke Army Medical Center (www.bamc.amedd.army.mil), also known as San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). San Antonio is a vibrant city with a family oriented, welcoming and committed Jewish community.
San Antonio’s Jewish community began with the influx of German and Russian Jews in the mid-1800s and has continued to grow both in its commitment to San Antonio itself, and also in its passionate connection to, and support of, the State of Israel.
Through its vibrant and generous community of donors, the Federation provides support to the network of affiliate agencies housed at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus of the Jewish Community. The Campus is a unique and significant asset and the heart of the Jewish Community. It is home to the Federation, the San Antonio Holocaust Museum and its outstanding community educational programming, the JCC (Jewish Community Center), JFS (Jewish Family Services), the Eleanor Kolitz Academy Jewish Day School, and the offices of The Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services.
The Federation also supports collaborative programming with community congregations, representing the richness and diversity of Jewish ideology, as well as other Jewish and secular organizations in greater San Antonio, Israel and around the world. The Federation raised $1.9 million in its 2011 annual campaign and currently holds $10 million in endowment assets. For more information, please visit the Federation’s website at: www.jfsatx.org.
