Development Director
Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley
South Bend, Indiana
The Jewish Community:
The Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley serves the Jewish community of 2,500 in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Indiana and Benton Harbor, Edwardsburg, Niles, and St. Joseph, Michigan of which about 70% are donors to the Jewish Federation. The Jewish community has 4 synagogues (one Reform, two Conservative, and one Orthodox), a Torah Center, an Orthodox Jewish Day School, and a boys and girls Yeshiva. Our Jewish Federation is considered a “small functional federation” as we run a healthy Jewish Family Service, an Israeli Shaliach program, a thriving Jewish Day Camp, a Michiana Jewish Historical Society, a dynamic Youth Group, and a growing Young Adult program. Our Jewish community is made up of a diverse professional base of doctors, lawyers, business professionals and a significant number of individuals involved with the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University at South Bend and other surrounding colleges. When compared to its fellow “small” Federations, St. Joseph Valley has a long history and a strong commitment to overseas allocations but has also made a significant financial investment in the future growth of our local Jewish community. This year’s annual campaign raised $600K and we boast an Endowment Fund of more than $6.5 million. The Jewish Federation sits on 27 beautiful acres with both a developed campus and an undeveloped arboretum. The Federation team is currently being restructured but ideally will be comprised of 5 full time and 5 part time employees. South Bend is located 2 hours (80 miles) east of downtown Chicago, Illinois, 3 ½ hours north of Indianapolis, Indiana and 3 ½ hours southwest of Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan.
