Minneapolis and its suburbs are home to approximately 35,000 Jews; and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation has historically conducted one of the most successful Community Annual Campaigns in the country with 5500 generous donors. Supporting more than 50 partner agencies and programs throughout the local, overseas and global community; the Community Annual Campaign raises over $10 million. The Jewish Community Foundation, the planned giving and endowments branch of the Federation, has over $68 million in assets with 800 funds under management. While the Community Annual Campaign remains the Federation’s principal fundraising effort, the Federation leadership continues to develop new strategies for outreach and engagement as well as cultivation and solicitation in order to raise additional resources to meet community needs today while planning for the future

It is known for its strong educational system; a diverse and strongly supported arts community, including, some of the finest and most extensive theater outside of New York; and one of the best designed and maintained park systems. Minneapolis is home to four professional sports teams as well as the University of Minnesota. It was recently named the number one bicycling city in the country by Bicycling Magazine. It is a community that brings its highly educated children back home to settle and build their own families.
An affiliate of the Jewish Federations of North America, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation is part of a network of over 160 Federations through the U.S. and Canada.
Previously, the Federation has had two discrete development staffs – one for annual (Campaign) fundraising, and one for planned giving and donor directed fund development (Foundation). The Federation has begun an initiative to integrate these two functions into a single development operation to maximize our efficiency and effectiveness in financial resource development.
The Minneapolis Jewish Federation seeks a dynamic professional, well-versed in change management, to develop and implement a plan for total financial resource development, which may include staffing restructure and realignment of resources, to achieve the Federation’s financial resource achievement goals. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will serve on the executive management team, lead the development team, serve as the director of the Jewish Community Foundation and play a key role in overall organizational strategy.
The CDO will develop and execute a comprehensive and diversified financial resource development plan that encompasses annual fundraising as well as planned giving and endowments. This includes overseeing the Federation’s legacy campaign strategy and implementation and leading the integration of planned gift cultivation, marketing, and stewardship.
The CDO, in partnership with the CEO, will play a key role in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donors and will him/herself carry a portfolio of major donors as well as serve as a role model for the development team and senior staff to pursue and achieve the organization’s philanthropic goals.

Indirect Reports: 2 – administrative support
- Design and implement a development plan that reflects the philanthropic goals of the organization and includes cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, donor relationship management and donor recognition across all giving levels, with a special emphasis on major donors and prospects.
- Enhance strategies and develop new ones to increase active donor base, elevating gift levels of current donors, secure bequest intentions and development of new donor advised and restricted funds.
- Review and evaluate the current development operations and initiate new development strategies to support organizational change. Lead an organizational change effort to an integrated development approach, recognizing the cultural shift from previously segmented annual and endowment/planned giving efforts.
- Manage and supervise professional development staff, with emphasis on ongoing training and staff development.
- Analyze, recommend and implement a system of accountability with performance metrics to determine the success of development strategies and activities.
- Serve as lead staff for the Development committee of the Board of Directors (in formation), and act as primary professional liaison on development issues to the Board.
- Serves as lead staff for the Foundation Board of Trustees.
- Collaborate with the Marketing Department in producing all written and collateral materials related to the development plan.
- Partner with the Community Impact Department (planning) to develop a menu of funding opportunities consistent with Board and CEO strategic priorities.
- Coordinate with the Finance Department on procedures and policies for tracking and reporting development activities.
- Enhance visibility of the Federation in the community, through development of strong relationships with senior leaders and executives in community agencies, synagogues, and other constituent groups of the Federation. Represent the Federation at key community events.
- Engage with other senior development professionals across the philanthropic sector to learn about, assess and adopt best practices in financial resource and donor development.
- Other duties as needed or directed to further the fundraising and overall goals of the Federation.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a combination of high-profile non-profit and/or corporate settings with substantive leadership responsibility for fundraising and institutional advancement.
- Demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising and in stewardship of a large portfolio of major donors.
- Skilled in identifying and anticipating the impact of emerging trends in philanthropic development and fundraising and incorporating these into decision making.
- Effective and articulate communicator demonstrating passion, vision, energy, integrity and good judgment.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing short and long-term strategic activities measured against clear goals and objectives.
- Strong management and leadership skills, including demonstrated success developing high-performing, empowered teams in a culture of accountability and discipline.
- Proven record in establishing and stewarding long-term trusted relationships with clients, donors and volunteer leaders and agencies and institutions.
- Experience with and knowledge about charitable gift planning and philanthropic vehicles; and ability to facilitate sophisticated philanthropic and estate planning conversations.
- Models a personal commitment to the Jewish community, Jewish values and a proven commitment to broader civic and community issues.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Graduate degree in business, law, Jewish community service, or related field preferred.
