Reporting to the Vice President, Center for Jewish Philanthropy, the Development Officer will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a cohort of donors in the $1-$5,000 range, with particular focus on engaging potential leaders as well as potential major donors.  The Development Officer is an integral part of the CJP team of nine professionals who meet regularly to exchange ideas and help each other to function at a high level of organizational excellence.

In order to achieve this goal, the Development Officer will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Maintain a personal portfolio 85-100 donors and prospects with an aggregate gift value of at least $300,000.
  • Oversee and manage volunteer-driven affinity groups, including Women’s Philanthropy and the Cardozo (legal profession) and Maimonides (health profession) Societies.
  • Develop new affinity groups focused on individuals in the technology and real estate industries.
  • Supervise the activities of a Campaign Associate whose portfolio includes soliciting $1K donors, developing young leadership programs and supporting the organization’s volunteer fundraising team.
  • Work closely with the Events Manager to plan and implement Jewish Federation fundraising events.
  • Work with professional colleagues and volunteer leaders to identify, cultivate and solicit a roster of prospective new donors.
  • Participate in relevant community events to meet and engage prospective donors within and outside affinity group areas.
  • Cultivate and develop relationships with volunteer leaders and other local partner organizations.

Approximately 50% of this position's time should be spent identifying, engaging, cultivating, and soliciting donors and prospective donors.

The Development Officer will be required to meet annual fundraising goals set in collaboration with key volunteer leaders and colleagues; recommend new strategies and approaches to enhance fundraising; engage in ongoing cultivation and stewardship of his/her assigned donors; and provide institutional leadership to further the work of the Jewish Federation.  The Federation also provides opportunities for continuing professional development.


  • Bachelor’s degree required along with a minimum of five years of related experience or a track record of successful nonprofit leadership, including philanthropic achievement
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and managerial capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks 
  • Supervisory experience is essential 
  • Possess an entrepreneurial skill set to identify and engage individuals in the work of the Jewish Federation
  • Must have a strong familiarity with the Jewish community and have an ability to share the value proposition of the Jewish Federation effectively to donors
  • Must be able to exercise significant judgment and confidentiality in working with prospects, volunteers, and JFGS staff
  • Some evening and weekend work required
